Justin Timberlake famously said that “a million dollars isn’t cool,” in The Social Network, but a Howard County woman chasing the $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot isn’t scoffing after winning a seven-figure prize.
Maryland Lottery officials confirmed that a 30-year-old woman who purchased a $10 ticket at River Hill Sunoco in Clarksville turned it in to a $1 million second-tier prize in the Wednesday, July 19 drawing.
“We have to remember to stopper Powerball tickets,” the woman said to her family after leaving a gathering last week, officials said. And it turned out to be a fortuitous decision after she discovered her cash windfall the day after the drawing.
“I actually scanned the winning ticket on my phone the next day,” the winner’s husband, a federal employee said. The message that he received said to contact the Lottery. “I called my wife and said, ‘If you win, will you share it with me?’”
As her husband was reading back the winning numbers, the healthcare worker realized that some of them matched, and when she saw where the winning $1 million ticket was sold, she simply said, “I knew it was me.”
She never responded about sharing the million dollar prize.
The winning numbers on July 19 were 07-10-11-13-24 with a Powerball of 24. Officials said that the woman hit the first five before missing on the Powerball.
Following the big win, she said that she plans to put the winnings into savings.
“It’s not life changing,” she said. “But, it’s nice to have a little cushion and security.”
